Thermos:
We used to preface live performances of “The Cult” with a 3-part harmony, a capella version of the old hymn. Yeah, we were trying to be ironic (or blasphemous, or something). Actually, I think we just enjoy trying to do 3-part harmony. Unfortunately, in this recording, we kind of drifted into 2-part with an octave on the melody – because 3-part harmony, arranged more or less on the fly, is tough.
When we got into the studio with Jim, this song was dropped as an intro to “The Cult”, though I don’t remember if it was our choice or heavily suggested by Jim.
Today’s image is based on an old Byzantine Maestà painting. I took Mary & Jesus out and slapped our friend Biff in. His face and position were perfect for just such a treatment.
