Ingus —
Every once in a while, we’d write a song we just weren’t quite happy with, no matter how we tried. The Battle Within, Ballad of Galactus, Nothing Is Wrong, and Top of the Pond are prime examples of this. If you don’t recognize those titles, it’s because try as we might, we never got a version we were happy with enough to record. Crystal Pools is close to this group, in that yeah, we recorded it, but I don’t know if we ever liked it.
On paper, it should be good — It’s based on C.S.Lewis’ The Magician’s Nephew, so it’s got that sci-fi / geeky underpinning that some of our really good songs have, it’s one of our heavier songs, it’s actually got a chorus, Louis sings it really well…
But I still don’t like it. Maybe you will. I think it gets some studio treatment later on Latchet/Do Not Release, but odds are you never heard that one either, so this is probably your first introduction to this song. Maybe you’ll think it’s better than I do.
Louis –
We never recorded Top of the Pond did we? We might should give that one another shot.
I’m even trying to play like Tommy and/or Marky Ramone here.
Thermos:
This song has two interesting parts for me: the beginning, and right before the final verse. Other than that, I’m with Mr. Horse. I’m willing to posit that the chorus is too long with too little variation. I’m sure with a little more tweaking, we would have enjoyed this song more. However, we didn’t enjoy the song enough to work on it any further – a bit of a catch-22.
I remember this song being the downfall of the first night’s efforts for State of Bliss. We all left pretty discouraged, since after several takes this song just wasn’t happening.
I still play some of the bassline from “Nothing is Wrong”, every now and again.
