Ingus - Ah, here we go. I should have saved my Jackopierce story for this version of the song. Oh well. Louis’ harmonies are spot-friggin-on on this one, and come on, this does kind of sound like a Jackopierce song, right?
I’m sad the tape is in such crummy condition for this song. You can hear that warbaling that no amount of compression would take care of. Still, it’s a good example of the song, because:
a) it’s raw as hell. I love that.
b) It doesn’t have the horribly flown-in guitar solo that the studio version sports,
and
c) the “la la la la la” background vocals (the idea for which I stole from a Camper Van Beethoven song. Go fig.) which I was told later on in the studio that we could not do, because it wouldn’t work, and would muddy up the song and ruin it TOTALLY WORK HERE, DO NOT MUDDY UP THE SONG, DO NOT RUIN IT, AND SOUND FRIGGIN COOL, AND WE DIDN’T HAVE A FANCY SHMANCY STUDIO AND PROFESSIONAL MICS AND MORE THAN 4 TRACKS AND AN ADAT MACHINE. WE JUST HAD THE PORTAPOTTY03 AND SOME CASSETTES. AND THE WILLINGNESS TO JUST TRY SOMETHING AND SEE IF IT MIGHT WORK, CAUSE WE’RE PAYING YOU BY THE HOUR.
whew.
Been meaning to mention that for like 15 years now. I feel better. Thanks.
The Count has something to say about fancy schmancy ADAT studios in todays image.
I might need to lay off the diet coke before I do the Toast posts…
Next up: another Feminine Jesus demo, and over-use of the Big Muff pedal.
Louis - I had forgotten how the “La’s” switch from 1 and 3 to 2 and 4, which I dig.
I prefer this version better over the S.O.B. version…it sounds like we’re having fun.
Thermos - Heh. Sounds like I forgot how to play the little bass bit at the end. Considering I re-recorded it in my bedroom, with all the time in the world, one would think I’d have kept going ’til I played it correctly.
I was never overly fond of the “la la la la la” bit (still can’t say I’m swayed), but it doesn’t ruin the song.
