State Of Bliss - The Demos (1995) — By Ingus on December 8, 2009 at 11:19 pmPodcast: Play in new window | Download
Ingus - Whoa, I have ZERO recollection of recording this, but it’s pretty cool.
Ooh, I got a “muchas gracias” in there. Sweet.
So let me tell you about the Electro Harmonics Big Muff Pedal. It uses harmonic distortion instead of overdriving a preamp or pre-transistors to go “zzzzhhhhhhhhhh” instead of “brrrrrrroowwwwww”. This “zzzhhhhhhhhh” is what you hear on this track. This might be the first recording we did with it, but that big shiny silver pedal stole my rock and roll heart, and it certainly won’t be the last. I’m pretty sure I used it for the majority of the State of Bliss studio album, and it’s what gave us that fantastic feedback between Feminine Jesus and Monsters on that record.
You gotta love the “ZHHHHHHHH”.
Check out today’s picture – which is incredibly awesome for at least four reasons.
- We’re on the cover of the Flint Journal’s Entertainer section, sharing the bill with Pocohontas. The Disney movie. Bad ass.
- There’s a picture of Rush from something… another newspaper article, maybe? Back of an album? I forget, but they’re in this EXACT pose, with the exact same hairdos and expressions. Geddy, Neil, Alex from left to right.
- Folk Punk.
- We’re on the fire escape of the building in which 7 years from the date of this photo, I will start Flint City T-Shirts (and later sell to Mikey), where Thom currently works. How sweet is that? Even crazier, this is the same fire escape that can be seen in Semi-Pro, during the scene where Will Farell is lying in a dumpster. That dumpster is directly below us, off camera. Trend setters, us.
- (an unofficial 5th point) My hair looks awesome.
Thermos - The Rush photo was on the Entertainer just a few weeks earlier, I believe, in reference to their upcoming show at Pine Knob, or some such.
That Big Muff pedal was definitely like the GI Joe character from the re-dubbed PSAs – the body massage machine. Only it didn’t do body massages, just feedback.
I, on the other hand, adopted the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face, if for no other reason than it looked like the pedal was smiling at me. Stomping on the nose of that little happy face yielded some of the thickest bass distortion ever….
I miss my hair from this photo.
Louis – I don’t miss my hair from that photo. I do, however, miss that metal pole sticking out of the side of my head. Where did I leave that thing?
