Not Quite Yoda

Do Not Eat (1994) — By Ingus on October 19, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Jay’s shining moment!  I’d forgotten how good the underlying classical guitar masterpiece on this song was.  The Spanish instructional tape was, I believe, furnished by one of my sisters, and leads into tomorrow’s track, Feminine Jesus.

What does Yoda have to do with anything?  I have no idea.  The movie Se7en had just come out, so it might be a reference to that.  Again, maybe Louis knows.

What does the Spanish tape have to do with Feminine Jesus or this song?  Again, no idea, but we thought it was hilarious.

A couple things of note:

We were so amused with ourselves for the concept of this weird ass recording that the fact that the tape says “oral practice one” completely escaped us.  Apparently, we’re five year olds, not twelve year olds.

This recording, I think, predates the Barney the Dinosaur craze.  As such, the song Jay is playing is “this old man”, and has nothing to do with us loving you, or you loving us.

Today’s flyer is actually part of a mini-fanzine Joel Rash put out in 95, I believe called “Union Maid Amalgamated”, featuring UMA, Flint Local 432’s burly, wrench-toting mascot.  Not the ad to the left for our tape-release show in April 95.  April 95?!?  We recorded this stuff in 94!  what took us so long? Oh yeah, hand copying all those tapes in Louis’ Mom’s living room.

The real “Do Not Eat” release was in Mat’s basement at his birthday party. I remember asking for autographs again, talking Tick, and some gnarly rounds of Clay-O-Rama!

Haha, just noticed that my first band ever, Mad Isaac, opened the show. I’m sure more white-knuckled, Vedder-esque swaying was taking place during a Lemonheads cover.

Clay-o-rama was the greatest game ever. I wonder if the rules are somewhere online.
Mad Isaac, named after Flint area realtor Imad Isaac, I believe, was awesome, and yeah, I remember seeing you guys play “Rest Assured” by the Lemonheads and thinking, okay, these kids are alright! Bass player or no!

Ah, April 28, 1995…. That’s the night I joined the band.

I had you write up the rules of Clay-O-Rama for the second issue of Punk Out!, a zine that I did with a friend. (ah, to be young and not care about creating quality as much as just creating something) When the issue printed is was almost unreadable and you had even taken the time to type it up nice and neat on a sweet typewriter. I think I still have it somewhere.
