The Cult (live)

Do Not Eat (1994) — By Ingus on October 12, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Ingus – Hey, here we are back at Pete’s house party (11/94 it says on the liner notes).  Low, low fi again, but man we had fun on this one (listen to the crowd!).  The Cult was one of the songs scrapped from the ep.  I believe we had 3 songs that didn’t make the cut: The Cult, The Battle Within (a Ratza song that we played live a lot but never recorded) and Crystal Pools (a song of mine that never really flew.  It was based on The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis).  None of em were good enough for the ep that first time around.  The Cult made it onto State Of Bliss, and the other two faded into the third string setlist lineup.

I still like The Cult.  Hasn’t changed much over the years.  Oh – I remember some journalist or another making fun of Nirvana’s penchant for writing songs that all had whiny verses and screamy choruses, so I wanted to do a song that was exactly the opposite.

Louis – I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t have been on the E.P.  Couldn’t have been a time issue.

Ingus – Hmmmm… I’m running out of pictures from the Jay era, so today you get a continuation of last week’s early (and poorly exposed) studio photos.  The smiley faced guy on the tom-toms is named Herman.  Louis drew him on positively everything when we first started.  Writing on the toms would continue throughout my tenure, from setlists to the words to Pet Semetary.  And now I’ve worked in our first Ramones reference!

I remember thinking this was your most rock and roll song ever…it made me a little uncomfortable because, well, seeing Ingus angry always made me uncomfortable, even if it was only for pretend.

In later days, I also remember using my spiffy wireless system and playing bass on this song from the middle of S. Saginaw St. in front of the late Beans and Leaves. You see, you can concentrate on not getting hit by cars when you don’t have to hold down any frets to play a song!

Ah, I remember that PA system in the corner. Hey it was free! (but heavy)

  • Ingus says:

No way, I paid 100 bucks for that thing!! Now, the fine folks I purchased it from may have gotten it free… and of dubious legality…

I totally remember that JG! You’re the shit! Don’t worry, you can be the shit and be into the Lord- just look at me!! ;-D
