Feminine Jesus (live)

Do Not Eat (1994) — By Ingus on September 28, 2009 at 8:07 am

[-Ingus-] – This, I believe, was the last Ratza-penned song we did before he left (not counting “Crying Moon”, which doesn’t count, as I don’t think we ever really nailed down how it went, despite playing it at several shows), and the only recording we have of him singing it.  Louis took over vocal duties on Feminine Jesus for the demo (which will be posted here in the pretty near future).

Playing live with Matt, at this time (December 1993) was exciting, fun, confusing and frustrating all at once.  He’d frequently change the structure of songs on stage, which, with the terrible acoustics and zero monitors of many of the venues, meant Louis and I often adopted a “just keep playing, we’ll figure out where he is in the song eventually” approach.  The unrehearsed “1-2-3 STOP” at the end of this track is a perfect example.

That’s not to say, though, that these shows weren’t fun.  I still remember this show being one of my favorites.

Today’s image is another shirt from the Aaron Handwerker collection – this is the second one we made. It had the same back to it as the chicken little shirts (the “louis warming his hands” design), but in different colors.  This “square circle toast” logo replaced the ransom logo we’d been using before on flyers and such, and we stuck with it for a while – until we discovered Clem, the Do Not Eat guy, I believe, in a bag of beef jerky.

But that story is for a completely different post.

Louis – As someone who was raised in a fairly religious family this song seemed as rebellious as you could possibly get.  That might be why we held on to it so long.  I like this version better than the one we recorded in the studio.
