Pictures of Matchstick Men (live)

Do Not Eat (1994) — By Ingus on September 23, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Ingus – Live from the Capitol Cafe.  We showcased the new Snakelips Doll, which was a Scooter doll from The Muppet Show, altered to look like JohnJohn.  We always had a lot of weird props on stage in those days.  The Snakelips Doll, one of those dancing flowers, my toy boat, buncha stuff.

Many people know about the cardinal sin of bands wearing their own t-shirts on stage.  We broke this rule several times in the early years.  Lesser known is the just-as-cardinal sin of peforming a cover of a cover.  A song in the style of another band that remade that song.  We did this so much, it’s completely embarrassing.

We covered the Lemonheads cover of Luka, Green Day’s cover of Knowledge, and a ton more.  This, for instance is a cover of Camper Van Beethoven’s version of the Status Quo song.  Shameless.

The flyer is not from the show at which this was recorded, but it’s close.   Louis’ head is in the girl’s cleavage.  Completely unintentional.  For real.  I swear.

Louis – I’m sure I was ok with it.

I remember seeing you guys play this live once with a buddy of yours from U-M that played the electric violin. (Another Capitol show, maybe?) I can still hear the newbies in the crowd laughing skeptically and nervously for about 5 seconds until you guys started. After that, nothin’ but love.

That was our very first show not at the High School or at a house party. Capitol Theater. Jason (the kid on the violin) is a pretty big name in turntablism these days – his site is http://www.jasontaft.com/ . I have fond memories of that show – the whole crowd thought we were complete dorks until we started playing. I mean, they were right, but, you know…

I remember you all doing a great version of Faith and loved to hear Luka… Might you have a recording of Truancy?
