Taking A Fence (demo)

Do Not Eat (1994) — By Ingus on September 21, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Ingus – Sometimes you record a demo, and no matter how hard you try in the actual studio you just can’t get the same feel.  Yeah, the mix is a little weird, and it’s kind of bassy, and a little slow, but man, I like the feel this track has.

Little known fact: the words to Taking A Fence were actually written by our good friend Pete (at whose parents house the photo for Strange But Still was taken), and it’s at least partly inspired by those co-ed naked sports shirts that were everywhere in the early 90s.  I wrote the music, Louis sings, Jay begrudgingly plays bass.

Studio version of this appears on State Of Bliss later, but I really like this one better.

Today’s photo is a sticker we made, on paper of course.  I thought the tagline was clever.  Cause we practiced and recorded in my parents’ basement at the time.  No? Listen, pal…

Louis – at the beginning you can hear the nagging, hacking smoker’s cough of a boy who had never smoked in his life.  I’m pretty sure at that point if we were doing a song that Ingus didn’t write the words to I laid claim to it.

Originally there was a call/response part on the bridge.  I’d sing “if words could ever be…” and Ingus would repeat.  I don’t know why we dropped it.

At one point while we were working on the arrangement for this song, Brooks turned to me and told me that this would be the song to get us signed…

    Wow-15 years ago.
Here are a few more lesser known tidbits.
-I wrote this while in class at GMI
-The first version of this song was just Ingus and had completely different music. I maybe the only one in the world with a copy of that version. That music later evolved into the song Storm.
-Taking A Fence was derived from the Co-ed Naked Camping Shirt-Feeling Intense

I like the tingly feeling I get when I think about other pieces of trivia about this song that are probably better left unposted….
