The EP original liner art
Album Art, Burnt Toast (1993) — By Ingus on September 18, 2009 at 11:08 pmAnd that wraps up the ep! Here’s the original liner notes and art for it. Revel in its ball-point-pen glory!
The cover art was drawn by yours truly. Not too much to say about it – it’s a pinup, but with an emphasis on the idealized and unobtainable (much like the subjects of most of the songs herein)
The spine is a pure cut and paste work from different magazine headers – totally ransom style in the days before ransom fonts. The crowd scene behind the letters (yep, that’s a crowd scene. let’s hear it for low-fi photocopying!) was lifted from an ad in rolling stone for a Paul McCartney cd.
Beyond the spine is more people from the Paul McCartney ad, and the handwriting of yours truly. Again, FEEL the high tech!
Inside we have some hand-written liner notes and thank-yous, a photo taken at Omnium Gatherum, a drawing of a toaster (perspective!) and Ratza on a swing. Remember the photo of Louis on a swing with his hair all standing up? This one was taken moments later.
None of this photocopied well, especially the Ratza photo, which was often misconstrued as something incredibly lewd. You’d also think I could have taped some white paper in the center flap to draw the toaster on, but no, right there on the photocopy, so that the grass shows through the side of the toaster. Nice.
We had 100 copies pressed on chrome cassette, with screen printed shells and everything. It looked totally pro. We sold out of em pretty quick, if I remember correctly, but never payed my dad back the money I borrowed to make them. I blame this little bit of bad karma for the perpetual bass player turnover we experienced almost directly afterward.
Since we sold out of the initial 100 tapes, and squandered the profits, the next cassette release was decidedly more DIY. Do Not Eat was copied by hand on Louis’ mom’s dual tape component on their living room stereo. Punk Rock.
