His Eternal Rest
Burnt Toast (1993) — By Ingus on September 11, 2009 at 9:36 pmPodcast: Play in new window | Download
Ratza and I were hanging out at his parents’ house some time in 92. He had words written down, and I came up with a chord structure and a rough melody. I think I’d met Louis approximately twice at this point. Thus, I think this was the second Burnt Toast song written.
The first was called “You Can’t Surf In Lake Erie”, and was a blatant ripoff of “Walk Don’t Run”, the verses of which I later cannibalized into “Go Fish”. Don’t say we don’t believe in recycling! At any rate, since YCSILE was never played in front of an audience, let’s just go ahead and consider this the FIRST Toast song.
And what a song it is! There weren’t a lot of punker bands busting out the three part harmony back in the day, so people tended to give us some notice, or some weird looks, or both.
Recording was tricky, as we went track by track – drums first, and there wasn’t a click track, so getting everyone to come back in together on the bridge took some doing. I think if you goose the volume, you can hear Louis counting.

I haven’t heard this song in forever! Awesome!
Not even the cigarette lighters and the slow-dancing jocks in the basements of family restaurants could keep this from being one of my faves!
Coincidentally, Brian (wally, chuck, etc), I have that entire show (Marshall Dillon’s 18th birthday in the basement of Country Jim’s Family Restaurant (now Applebees) on tape, and yes, it will be posted here. Most likely after we do all the studio releases I’ll go back and post the live stuff. We got a lot. Why? I dunno, why not?
